Procedure to obtain a Driving License

Driving is fun, but you have to be very responsible when the steering wheel is in your hands. Government has its own rules, term and conditions to decide who should be allowed to drive on the roads. If you are a drivers licence holder, only then you are permitted to drive on the roads of your city.

A driving license is a card that is issued from the RTO (Regional Transportation Office) to those who are eligible to drive a vehicle.  There are different types of vehicles and for each vehicle; there is a particular passing criteria to obtain the driving license. Also, the conditions vary from one country to another. The general procedure to obtain the license is:



1. You should have crossed the minimum age required to apply for the license.

2. Before you get your permanent license, you will have to enroll for a training class, where you will be taught the rules and regulations and the functions of your vehicle.
A Learner's License is crucialto obtain a Permanent License. The qualification to obtaining a Learner's License for a private motor vehicle for a vehicle of 50 CC engine capacities and without any gear is 16 years. The minimum age to apply for a permanent license to drive a private motor vehicle is 18 years.

3. Within a month time you will have to give an Audio/ Visual Test. This is to make sure if you have the knowledge of traffic signals and road etiquettes.  This is for obtaining a learners permit, which remains valid for six months.

4. Under six months of getting your learning driving license, you will have to go for obtaining your permanent driving license and drive with an RTO official along your side, you will have to drive for a few miles and the official decides whether you pass the test or not.

5. Once you succeed in both the tests, your license will reach you in a week’s time.

A person who is at least 20 years old and possesses a Learner's License can obtain a License for driving a commercial vehicle. Also, one has to be conversant with the traffic rules and regulations in all the cases.

The motor licensing authority also issues International Driving License to the citizens of India. Those who wish to apply for, it can be made to the licensing officeauthorized over the area in which the holder of the driving licenselives and possesses relevant documents. International Driving License has the maximum validity of one year. The authority charges a small fee to issue the license.

To get an International Driving License, following documents should be presented:
· Valid driving license
· Attested copy of address proof
· Attested copy of Birth Certificate
· Valid passport
· Valid Visa
· Two passport size photograph.

The drivers licence carries all the personal information of its owner, like their photograph, name, age, blood group, permanent address and the type of vehicle that they are allowed to drive. Thus, this official document also works as an identity of the holder and can be presented when an identity proof is demanded.
